Savior Not Made by Hands. Christ in the Tomb (“Do not mourn Me, Mother”)

Iconography:  Savior Not Made by Hands, Do not lament for me, oh, Mother

Date: XVII century. Middle of the 17th century.

Iconographic school/art center:  Kholmogory

Origin: was removed from the church of the Baptism of Our Lord (1886) on Ukhtostrov, Kholmogorsky district, Archangelskaya region.

Material: Wood, cut-back central portion, canvas, levkas, tempera

Dimensions:  height 136 cm, width 103,2 cm

Half of the corpus of the Savior is in the tomb, His head is slightly inclined, eyes are closed, hands are out across each other. To the left, behind the tomb, is the Mother of God, mourning Him. Behind them – the Cross, two angels are flying to it. At the sides of the tomb are saint women, John the Theologian and centurion Longinus.  
In the upper part of the icon is the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands being held by the two angels standing on the clouds.
