Nicholas of Zaraisk with Scenes from His Life, St.

Date: XVI century. The first quarter of the 16th c.

Iconographic school/art center:  Novgorod school

Origin: From the Church of the Holy Trinity in the village of Rucheiki, Borovichi district, the Novgorod region.

Material: Wood, tempera

Dimensions:  height 114,5 cm, width 82,5 cm

The icon’s center is surrounded by fourteen scenes from the life of St. Nicholas, each accompanied by cinnabar inscriptions, some of which are illegible due to destroyed color layers. The inscriptions in the lower border panels are written in later periods.

The scenes:

1. The nativity of St. Nicholas;
2. The Baptism of St. Nicholas;
3. St. Nicholas consecrated archbishop
4. St. Nicholas appears in a dream to eparch Eulalius;
5. St. Nicholas appears before the imprisoned generals;
6. St. Nicholas rescues the generals from the execution;
7. The miracle with the ship;
8. St. Nicholas rescues Demetrius from drowning;
9. The return of Basil, the son of Agricos;
10. St. Nicholas cuts the tree and drives the demons out of the well;
11. St. Nicholas heals the sick person;
12. The miracle of three girls;
13. The entombment of St. Nicholas;
14. The transfer of St. Nicholas’s relics from Myra of Lycia to Bari.
